As many of you know, I have dabbled in a lot of creative industries over the years, and experimented with starting several different businesses. This has resulted in me attending more job interviews and client meetings than I can count. I’ve managed to narrow the whole interview preparation process down to a science, and always get ready the same exact way. This alleviates any nerves I might have so that I can attend the meeting feeling completely relaxed and confident. I’ll be focusing this post mainly on my style choices, but I want to briefly touch on what I do from a professional standpoint. First, I always print out my resume to give my interviewer along with a business card. Second, before the meeting I visit the business’ website and brush up on information about them, especially in areas that pertain to what I am interviewing for. I like to familiarize myself with their mission and how they operate so that I can speak about it intelligently at the meeting. Okay, now on to the main reason for this post: how to dress to impress at an interview for a creative position. Interviewing for a creative role is often very different than a typical office job. Think about how your interviewer will most likely be dressed, and try to dress along those lines. Typically the person interviewing you will be a creative as well. Since they will probably be in somewhat casual attire, you do not want to make them feel uncomfortable by being way more dressed-up than they are. There are some exceptions (maybe your creative job will be working out of a high-end office), and this will require a bit of research on your part. Check out their social media and see how the employees are dressed! I almost always wear the same sort of outfit: well-fitting dark skinny jeans, classic heels, and a blouse that is conservative yet unique and memorable. I wear simple yet flattering makeup–No false lashes, colorful eyeshadow, or bold lips. It is important to look chic, professional, and not over-done. But most importantly of all, be yourself and show your personality!
