When unusual lipstick colors began trending a couple of years ago, I had hoped it would be a style that would come and go quickly. While they could be fun for photo shoots, they did not seem to me to be wearable for “real life”. Quite a bit of time has passed and this trend does not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, so I decided that it was time for me to figure out how to make it work for me. I realized that there are three factors to consider when selecting an unusual lipstick color to wear:
Find a Color That Flatters You
While this may sound completely obvious, it actually is tougher than it seems when it comes to unnatural lipstick shades. So many of the odd color options that are readily available right now from brands like NYX, Kat Von D, Urban Decay, and Jeffree Star are not only bold but also unflattering on me. For example, I would never be able to wear a yellow, grey, or white lipstick without looking like a total hot mess! It IS possible to find an unusual lipstick color that not only looks good on you, but is wearable for every day looks as well. Choose a color that compliments your hair and wigs, skin, and eyes. I have found that orange, dark purple, and this dark blue that I just discovered from EM Cosmetics are deceptively easy to pull off.
Let the Lipstick Be the Focus
Allowing your lipstick to be the focal point is absolutely key for creating a wearable look. Keep your outfit very simple and achromatic. For the rest of your makeup, create a dewy and flawless complexion but keep eye makeup very minimal. I consider it like a painting – if there are too many focal points, the eye does not know what to settle on and the result is a chaotic feeling. The master painters of the Renaissance knew to draw your eye into their paintings with one key focal point, with other factors in the painting leading toward it rather than distracting. Let your lipstick be that focus and don’t allow the rest of your look to detract from it.
Wear It With Confidence
This is the most important factor to remember! When wearing an unusual lipstick color, you are likely to attract a few stares and plenty of compliments from strangers, too! Rock that lipstick with confidence and soak up the attention 🙂
