On our last day in Florence, we took a day trip to the nearby cities of Siena and San Gimignano. We had a private driver named Alessandro who was super nice. Normally Brian and I aren’t quite private-driver-level of booshie, but our only other option would have been renting a car, and driving in Italy is a complete mess so we wanted to avoid that at all costs. I realized that the main rule of driving in Italy is that the larger you are, the more right of way you have. So buses, then cars, and lastly pedestrians. If you are the bigger vehicle, everyone smaller had better get the hell out of the way. Hence why we didn’t want to drive!
On our way to Siena, Alessandro drove us through the Tuscan countryside which was just beautiful. It was a foggy morning, but that made for more interesting photos along the way. After about an hour and a half we arrived in Siena. It is such a quaint city with steep, winding streets. We visited the cathedral there which was my favorite building so far. The walls and pillars are striped in black and white marble. It is unusual and almost dizzying to look at.
Next we drove to San Gimignano. It is a tiny, ancient town from Roman times. It feels like it is straight out of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones! It was fun to walk around and there were spectacular views of the rolling hills of Tuscany. After that we drove back to Florence, had one last delicious dinner there, and got ready to leave for Rome the next morning.
