I almost lost my shit when the Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits sold out while I was in the process of buying one on the website. I thought I had timed my check out process perfectly; I found out the exact time of the kyliecosmetics.com restock and logged on at that exact minute. But my internet connection was sluggish and everything sold out within minutes and before I was able to secure my $29 order. I didn’t expect the intense wave of disappointment that washed over me. A grown woman should NOT be this emotionally invested in a lipstick. How and when did Miss Jenner so stealthily wrap me up in her hype?!
Well, a week came and went, and it came time for the next restock. This time I enlisted Brian to help me out. He would log onto the website from his computer while I tried from mine. Somehow her managed to quickly get through on his and ordered my precious Lip Kit in my most wanted color: Koko K. VICTORY WAS MINE!!
A week later the signature drip-design box arrived in my mailbox. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. The packaging–from the shipping box, to the Lip Kit box, to the products themselves–are all impeccably designed. Major kudos to her graphic designers.
Now on to the formula. I have been wearing this lippie A LOT and am excited to share my thoughts on it with you.
THE APPLICATION:
Each Lip Kit comes with both a lip liner and a liquid lipstick. The instructions are to first line and fill your lips with the liner, and then layer the lipstick over top. The liner applies sooo smoothly and is incredibly soft. So soft that you will need to sharpen it after every 3-4 wears and it will probably finish before the lipstick does (they aren’t sold separately yet). The lipstick formula is very thin in comparison with other liquid lipsticks, but it is still so pigmented that you only need one coat! The color applies very evenly with no steaks or patches, and dries perfectly matte.
THE COLOR:
The color I purchased is Koko K. I would describe it as a smokey nudey pink. I think because my hair is so pink, the lippie in contrast looks more brown/neutral on me than it does on many others. I love how versatile this color is and it would probably look amazing on just about anyone with fair skin.
THE FEEL:
If you are a fan of liquid lipsticks, then you are already familiar with the slightly chalky feel that they leave on your lips. It is simply the nature of a long-wearing, matte product. I have heard people complain that their Lip Kit makes their lips feel dry, but I don’t think these people have probably tried many other formulas on the market because they all do that. My Lip Kit makes my lips feel much LESS dry than other liquid lipsticks that I have tried and I actually find it quite comfortable.
THE WEAR:
This is probably what I am most impressed with. I have worn my Koko K for periods of around 9 hours, through meals and ultra sweaty yoga sessions. The ONLY time that I have to touch up is after I eat something oily, and even then it is just the inner part of my lips.
OVERALL:
I am extremely impressed. For $29 you get a lip liner and a lipstick, which is much better than any of the other popular liquid lipsticks on the market right now. The application and wear are awesome. I only have two small complaints. First, I know I am going to need another lip liner long before I finish my lipstick, but I don’t know how I will be able to order one without getting another lipstick too. Second, the color options right now are more aimed toward people with tan skin. Most of the colors would look extremely dark on me. I’m confident that both of these issues will be resolved as the collection expands though.
What do you think of the Kylie Lip Kit? Do you have one yet or do you want one??
